After a summer long drought, we have had rain at last! A full three days of rain – hurricane remnants sweeping up from the Mississippi delta and washing the Midwest with storms.

Today the sun is out, and mushrooms and toadstools are appearing everywhere after a long absence. This one has freshly emerged in my compost heap. Amanita theirsii, I believe, bone-white and poisonous. I’ve always been fascinated with mushrooms and toadstools, with their eerie shapes and dark reputations. Late summer and autumn bring out many different kinds, and if moister weather holds I’ll treat you, gentle reader, to other photos of members of the Kingdom of Rot.
